NYS funds for attending Orphans 6, ETC

The Experimental Television Center administers the Media Arts Technical Assistance Fund, with support by the New York State Council of the Arts. The fund helps staff of media arts organizations (in the state) offset costs of symposium registration fees and travel expenses.

ETC asks that applications be sent as soon as possible. No applications accepted after March 14, 2008.

Music for surveillance and outtakes

A new feature of the symposium at NYU is another wrinkle in the musical work done for the presentations. Thanks to Professor Ron Sadoff (Director of Film Scoring), students in his innovative program will score seemingly "un-score-able" films, including a 1968 surveillance film shot at an anti-war protest and outtakes from a Catalan newsreel shot during the Spanish Civil War. The idea stemmed from long-time orphanista Julie Hubbert's work with students at the University of South Carolina during Orphans 5. Professor Hubbert recruited Sadoff to the orphan film cause while at "Music and the Moving Image," a 2007 conference he co-organized at the NYU Dept. of Music and Performing Arts Professions for its Program in Scoring for Film and Multimedia. Another great partner to have in this eclectic enterprise.

King Day update

Happy MLK Day. Seeing the major U.S. presidential candidates assemblying on the steps of the State House in Columbia, South Carolina today, led me to think of the remarkable film from the USC Newsfilm Library, which was screened at the Orphan Film Symposium in 2004. Shot in 16mm by a television news crew from Columbia, the footage gives us four minutes of King, May 9, 1966, telling a large crowd in the small town of Kingstree, SC, to "march on ballot boxes." His voice was stirring as always. More inspirational: a family who had been at the event in 1966 came to the screening and were deeply moved by this filmed record of Martin Luther King, Jr. firing up the Kingstree community. They were stunned and thrilled to find that a movie capturing that moment existed. And had been preserved and brought to life again.

Registration for Orphans 6

Looks like we will run out 'seats' for full registrations before January is over. It's great to see people signing up from so many places and professions: media artists from Australia, a film archiving professor from China, a Fulbright scholar from France, a library scientist from Chile, students from Germany and the Netherlands, a filmmaker from Canada, an archivist from Kentucky, film scholars from South Carolina, an audio restorationist from Hollywood. You get the picture.
If you plan to attend, sign up with due haste!
